ABATE is a Corporation involved in Motorcycle Legislation.

What We Believe In

Our Purpose

The main purpose of the ABATE organization is to work toward continued freedom of the road by insuring that motorcyclists' point of view is presented to our legislators and to promote motorcycle safety, rider education, and awareness. We are trying to alleviate the very real possibility of "Big Brother Government". We encourage all our members to be informed, registered voters. We write letters to our elected officials and stay aware of what is going on with motorcycle legislation, education and other transportation issues.  "New Rider" education classes with certified safety instructors are currently being offered by some New York State chapters. ABATE of New York currently has 25 chapters throughout the state. We welcome interested persons to any of our activities or to join our organization. Some of the examples of what we've been doing: Toy Runs, Poker Runs, Family Picnics, lobbying in Washington, letter writing campaigns, meeting with our legislative representatives in Albany.

ABATE's Position

American Bikers Aimed Toward Education is a not-for-profit organization.

ABATE is interested in promoting those measures that maintain and, in some cases, restore motorcycling in New York and in the nation as a very enjoyable and exciting sport and lifestyle.  ABATE of New York also would like to ensure that motorcycles are recognized as a space-saving and truly economical means of transportation.

ABATE's position on safety is to support all efforts and initiatives that will lead to accident prevention. We feel that a motorcycle rider training program that is widely available to young and beginning riders is one of the most important safety features a state can have. The majority of states have this already.

ABATE of New York has worked with the New York Legislature for the last several years to pass a rider education bill which passed in 1997. We also support awareness efforts directed at other road users, highlighting motorcycles and the special problems they have with other traffic. We are currently working on ITS and a helmet amendment bill along with other projects.

All ABATE of New York chapters are urged to participate in the Governor's proclaimed "Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Week" each spring. ABATE of New York directs all chapters and members to maintain contact with local, state and federal legislators and be registered to vote. We see a constant threat to motorcycling and to America's tradition of freedom of choice in general, from groups that may profit by legislating that right "to choose" away from the individual.

ABATE of New York maintains contact with many state and national rider groups and organizations for the betterment of motorcycling. ABATE of New York would like to see all decisions of what motorcycle safety equipment to use be left up to the adult, experienced rider. A motorcycle operator that does not drive in a safe and sober manner will not have an accident prevented by mandated equipment or as in many cases, will not be saved by that safety equipment.

Accident Prevention Is the Real Way to Motorcycle Safety.
